Accident Attorneys Fighting for Victims of Spinal Cord and Severe Back Injuries

The Law Offices of Michael F. Mahoney is a Lynn-based law firm, that serves the entire state and fights for the rights of those that have been injured due to the negligence of another party. Even though an accident involving any injury can be inconvenient and/or painful, there are few injuries as devastating as a spinal cord injury (SCI) or severe back injury.

What is a Spinal Cord Injury?

A spinal cord injury occurs when there is any amount of damage to the actual spinal cord – not disk herniation or back sprains. Because the spinal cord is what sends signals between the brain and the body, any damage can block communication and affect a person’s sensory, motor skills, and reflexes. The higher the injury is to the spine, the more severe the effect of the injury will be on the victim.

Spinal cord injuries are broken down into two categories – complete and Incomplete. A complete spinal cord injury is when there is a complete loss of the body’s function below the point of injury. An incomplete spinal cord injury is when a person still has some feeling and movement below the point of injury.

It is imperative that treatment is given quickly to an injured person. Taking steps to immediately reduce the swelling can help a victim with an incomplete injury avoid further damage that could result in a complete spinal injury.

Classifications of Spinal Cord Injuries

The American Spinal Injury Association uses a scale to describe a person’s functional impairment as a result of their spinal injury. The ASIA Impairment Scale is as followed:

A - Complete

This is where the victim has no motor or sensory function in the lowest sacral segment (S4-S5)

B - Incomplete

Sensory function below the neurologic level and in S4-S5, no motor function below the neurologic level

C - Incomplete

The victim’s motor function is preserved below the neurological level and more than half of the key muscle groups below the neurologic level have a muscle grade of less than 3

D - Incomplete

The victim’s motor function is preserved below the neurological level and at least half of the key muscle groups below the neurologic level have a muscle grade 3

E - Normal

The victim’s sensory and motor function is normal
